Valentines Day: Reflections on Love, Self, and Relationships

Founder, Mind Dojo

As I celebrate both Valentine’s Day and my wife’s birthday today, I find myself contemplating the true essence of love and the journey it has taken me on. For so long, I prided myself on being a considerate gift-giver, putting meticulous thought into every token of affection. Yet, beneath the surface of these outward expressions of love lay a storm of inner turmoil and self-doubt.

It’s taken me years to realize that my struggle during holidays wasn’t just about the stress of finding the perfect gift—it ran much deeper. Through my ongoing mental health journey, I’ve begun to unravel the tangled threads of my own self-perception. What I’ve discovered is both profound and liberating: I never truly learned how to love myself.

Living with a negative internal image, both physically and mentally, creates barriers that distance us from others, even those we cherish most dearly. I’ve felt the weight of this self-imposed isolation manifest in moments of short temper, in the urge to retreat into solitude, and in the physical toll it takes on my body.

But as I’ve embarked on the path of self-discovery and healing, I’ve started to glimpse a glimmer of hope amidst the shadows. By dedicating myself to pursuits that ignite my passion and letting go of the burdens of the past, I’ve begun to chip away at the walls I’ve built around my heart.

Learning to love oneself is perhaps one of the greatest challenges we face, especially for those of us who have spent a lifetime berating ourselves. Yet, I’m beginning to understand that it’s also the key to unlocking the full depth of our relationships with others.

As I learn to embrace my own worth and nurture a kinder, more compassionate relationship with myself, I find that I’m able to offer more of myself to those I love. The act of sharing my true feelings no longer feels daunting; instead, it’s become a source of joy and connection.

So, as I celebrate love in all its forms today, I offer this reflection as a reminder: the most profound relationships are built on a foundation of self-love. By tending to our own hearts with gentleness and care, we create space for love to flourish and deepen, both within ourselves and with those we hold dear. 🌹 #LoveYourself #DeepReflections #RelationshipWisdom #minddojo
